Annual state of the union address in Strasbourg

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker held his annual state of the union address in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday. Germany welcomed the proposals on the future of the EU, government spokesperson Seibert said after the speech. Foreign Minister Gabriel also acknowledged the ideas presented by Juncker.

The Europen Union was in a considerably better shape than a year ago, Seibert said in Berlin. The German government welcomed that Commission President Juncker talked about the important questions of the future and the priorities of the EU, Seibert continued, and went on to praise the numerous proposals that had been laid out.

Foreign Minister Gabriel also acknowledged the ideas presented by Juncker. "Jean‑Claude Juncker’s inspiring ideas give us a great deal of input for further discussions and debates," Gabriel wrote in a statement issued following the speech. He emphasised the role the Commission played in the process of European integration: "always looking ahead, being a pioneer of the European idea and never giving up in the search for ideas and suggestions on how we can foster our shared Europe, make it more resilient to crises and enhance it as a player with a global role".
