On 14 February, Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel swore in Rainer Sontowski and Walter Lindner to their new roles as State Secretaries.
Walter Lindner previously served as German ambassador to South Africa whilst Rainer Sontowski served as State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
Outgoing State Secretary Stephan Steinlein will follow former Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Bellevue Palace to assume the role of State Secretary in the Federal President’s Office.
State Secretaries are the highest-ranking civil servants who represent the Foreign Minster at the helm of the Foreign Service. The State Secretaries direct the spheres assigned to them in headquarters and monitor Germany’s missions abroad.
