Sigmar Gabriel is new German Foreign Minister

Gabriel took over from Frank-Walter Steinmeier on 27 January

Sigmar Gabriel has replaced Frank-Walter Steinmeier as German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs. Gabriel had served as Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy since 2013.

In a ceremony at the German Foreign Office, Steinmeier handed over the reigns to Sigmar Gabriel.

Gabriel has served as chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) since 2009. From 2005-09 he was Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.

Steinmeier has been nominated for the position of Federal President. The election will take place on 12 February 2017.
