For outstanding contributions to Holocaust Remembrance, German-Jewish relations & music

On 4 May, Ambassador Peter Ammon presented the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany to Gaby Flatow for her outstanding contributions to Holocaust Remembrance, German-Jewish relations and music.

For more than 20 years, Gaby Flatow has worked tirelessly for reconciliation and Holocaust remembrance. She has organised numerous concerts in the Czech Republic and Germany to keep the music and memory of Jewish composers who lost their lives during the Holocaust alive.

She played a seminal role in the establishment of the Hans Krása Foundation, whose mission is to celebrate the composers of Theresienstadt – especially Hans Krása, the composer of the children’s opera Brundibár.

Ambassador Ammon said in his speech: “Over more than two decades, you (Gaby Flatow) have helped make sure that the composers of the Theresienstadt ghetto and their works will not be forgotten, but be performed again and again – not only in Germany and the Czech Republic, but around the world. You gave the music of Theresienstadt its own voice, its own stage”.
