Ambassador Ammon welcomes the artists and guests

On 27 September, the German Embassy hosted an in-conversation event with German photographer Thomas Ruff and the director of the Whitechapel Gallery, Iwona Blazwick. The exhibition “Photographs 1979 – 2017” by Thomas Ruff is currently open at the Whitechapel Gallery until 21 January 2018.

On the occasion of the launch of the exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery Thomas Ruff and his curator, Whitechapel’s director Iwona Blazwick talked about Ruff’s work at the German Embassy.

The exhibition is a major retrospective and covers the full range of Ruff’s work, which includes a wealth of topics such as cosmology, suburbia, utopianism, catastrophe and many more.

In his welcoming address, Ambassador Dr Peter Ammon highlighted the significance of Thomas Ruff’s work for our world today, as the digital world has changed the authenticity of photography as a medium in a way which can be felt in all areas of society.

Born in 1958 in a small town on the edge of the Black Forest in Germany, Thomas Ruff later attended the renowned Staatliche Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf from 1977 to 1985: Numerous solo exhibitions followed internationally, including recently at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. A few months ago he was also selected as a finalist for the Prix Pictet photography award here in London.

Curator of his recent exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery is the gallery’s director Iwona Blazwick. Blazwick led the Whitechapel Gallery’s expansion in 2009 and also played a vital role in the development of Tate Modern. As the chair of the London Cultural Strategy Group and member of the advisory board of the Government Art Collection, she makes an important contribution to shaping the cultural scene in London and beyond. In 2008 Blazwick was awarded with the Order of the British Empire for services to art.

Ruff’s work will be shown at the Whitechapel Gallery between 27 September 2017 and 21 January 2018.
