"Woyzeck" at the Old Vic Theatre
Georg Büchner's classic "Woyzeck" comes to The Old Vic in London next May, featuring young talent John Boyega (Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens) in the title role, and Jack Thorne as scriptwriter.
The original mid-19th century setting is changed to the 1980s Berlin, where the Cold War substitutes the Napoleonic Wars and the world sits at a crossroads between Capitalism and Communism. On the border between East and West, a young soldier (Boyega) and his common law wife, Marie are trying to build a better future for their child. But the cost of escaping poverty is high, and its tragic consequences unfold in this searing tale of the people society leaves behind.
The play deals with the predetermined relationship between poverty, class, individual view on morality, motive for crime and their combined result: the differentiated chance to happiness and mobility the society endows its members with.
