Elger Esser: 'Morgenland'

German artist, and follower of the Düsseldorf School of Photography, Elger Esser’s first solo exhibition in the UK entitled ‘Morgenland’ will be shown at the Parasol unit foundation for contemporary art, London from 29 March -  21 May.

After studying at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie with Bernd and Hilla Becher, Elger Esser follows on from the Düsseldorf School photographers Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth and Thomas Ruff.

Nature and the landscape are central themes throughout Elger Esser's photographic oeuvre. Using pastel colours, calm-inspiring motives and sensitive and precise observation he captures the exact moment at which the character and atmosphere of a landscape are revealed.

In ‘Morgenland’, Esser’s images are somewhat reminiscent of the romantic images of faraway lands on old postcards, featuring are banks of rivers, traditional feluccas and dahabiya sailing vessels.
