Electronic ID card

Electronic ID cards can only be applied for in person at the German Embassy London or at the Consulate General in Edinburgh. Please remember to bring all the necessary documents and your application form with you. For applicants under 16 both the parents or the guardian of the applicant must be present at the appointment.


Appointment Booking

Appointments can only be booked online with the German Foreign Office. If you wish to apply for a passport and a German ID card at the same time please book 2 appointments.

German ID Card

German electronic ID card for applicants over 16

Applicants for ID cards are required to apply in person after making an appointment. Please note that ID cards are being printed at the Federal Printing Office in Berlin. Therefore the processing time can take up to 6-8 weeks.


German electronic ID card for children under 16

ID cards can be issued for children from birth. The application has to be done by the parent/ guardian for children under 16 with the child present during the application process.

Lost or Stolen ID cards

If your ID card was stolen or lost and the electronic online ID function is switched on you will have to cancel this ID card immediately, so your identity cannot be misused on the internet.

Change of address on German ID cards

Changes of address can be done in person or via postal application. Please note that if you are deregistered in Germany, the address on your ID card will not be changed to your address in the UK.

Notes on applying for confirmation of German nationality

Name declaration (marriage, divorce, change of name, child)

If you got married and wish to take your spouse's name or if a marriage was dissolved and you wish to change your name back to your name before marriage, a name declaration will be necessary BEFORE applying for the ID card.
