History Teacher Tour

The German Embassy London, together with the Federal Foreign Office, annually organises a professional trip for British teachers of history to Berlin. This year’s History Teacher Tour will take place from 15-21 October and is now open for applications until 8 September 2017.

The purpose of the Tour is to give participants a wide-ranging impression of present-day Germany, and Berlin in particular, as a background for teaching German history. The trips include highlights of contemporary Berlin, talks with history teachers and teachers' associations, and much more. The 2016 trip, for example, included a visit to the Federal Foreign Office, the German Historical Museum, a tour of the Reichstag, etc.

"The trip was an invaluable opportunity for me. It enhanced my knowledge of both German history and history pedagogy, as well as giving me an insight into German culture. Everything on the itinerary was really interesting and had a helpful focus on teaching or school visits."

Lauren Coates, 2016 participant

"The trip to Berlin was thoroughly enjoyable and has really enhanced my teaching practice. From the experience I have been able to make professional connections and develop my knowledge and understanding of Berlin as well as German history."

Emma Hall, 2016 participant

"I feel it is an invaluable programme that will continue to forge greater links between our nations."

Laura Lewis, 2015 participant

Scheduled for 15-21 October 2017, this year’s trip will focus on:

  • History of Europe past and present
  • Anniversary of the Reformation
  • History of the German Parliament Bundestag
  • World War I centenary, including its implication for today and commemorating the events in Germany and the UK

The tours are conducted in English.

All costs relating to the trip (including flight and accommodation) are covered by the German Foreign Office.

To participate in this year’s History Teacher Tour to Berlin, scheduled for 15-21 October 2017, please apply by 8 September 2017 using the application form provided.

Berlin has been the capital city of the united Federal Republic of Germany since 1990. In that time, it has become one of the hippest and most vibrant urban centres in Europe - with a flourishing cultural scene, brilliant nightlife, and a plethora of bars, restaurants, shops and cafés, as well as green open places.
